Luca
The shopping mall is a dizzying labyrinth of blinding lights, color-saturated shop windows, and a scent of artificial cinnamon filling the air. Luca, 38, pushes his way through the crowd to look for a gift for his nephew. He should feel joy, or at least the relief of taking a break from work for the holidays. Instead, when he walks past a toy store and hears the mechanical melody of an old music box, the world suddenly shuts down.
The noise of the crowd becomes muffled, distant, as if he were underwater. His breath catches in his throat like a stone. In an instant, Luca is no longer a grown man, a respected professional. He is a child again, curled up under the bed in a dark house, while outside his room the hell of domestic screaming, broken plates, and threats unleashed itself. His heart beats so fast it feels like it wants to burst out of his chest, his hands sweat cold.
It is the emotional hijacking of trauma: the FEAR system has activated at maximum volume, flooding the brain with signals of mortal danger and shutting down any capacity to reason or enjoy the moment. Luca is paralyzed in the middle of the celebration, unable to move, a prisoner of a memory that his body has memorized better than his mind.
